“Participate and yet watch” - Marco M.

Participate and yet watch

Traditions, especially those from India that push towards “non-action”—meaning not taking part in this fantastic adventure called life—completely miss the core of the matter.

Obviously, I understand that, if you are constantly at the mercy of your emotions and thoughts, there isn’t any room for observation and self-knowledge; however, there’s a difference between having spaces between the waves and complete calm.

Not participating in life limits the participant/actor, who then doesn’t get the chance to enjoy the show with its dramas and joys. It also limits observation and knowledge. If I spend my time motionless under a tree, I’ll never know the emotions that run through me during an argument with my wife or a mountain climb.

Is it possible to observe yourself in the midst of action? Absolutely yes, and it’s the great challenge that every living being should accept. To fully immerse oneself in life while at the same time staying a little detached.
