In twilight seasons like the present one, human beings, instead of elevating themselves, tend to bring others down.
In sports, we witness disgraceful behavior, where so-called athletes rejoice in others’ disqualifications, fake injuries, or compete even though some colleagues, who would often have defeated them, are excluded for political reasons.
What truly makes the news and captures the attention of beings afflicted by existential malaise is not the one who excels, the one who accomplishes something great, but rather misfortunes and weaknesses.
Envy, a true modern social disease, seems to seep from the pores of the skin, so much so that one cannot hear a sentence that speaks well of someone without it being followed by a “however” or a “but.”
