“The Gaze of Power” - Marco M.
The Gaze of Power
The Middle Ages were a mystical period, possessing greatness and perfect magnificence, like all times, in their imperfection.
In that period there was a sense of chivalry. Medieval chivalry was not a leveling downward as happens today in democratic countries; rather, the strong, the knights, were such precisely because they defended the weak without, however, leveling themselves to become like them.
The famous feudal lords, today considered little monsters, paid much less in taxes than the state collects today. Humans lived within a genuine community spirit (unlike today’s “communities”), without being hyper-controlled by the feudal lord in everything they did. Are we really better off? Is the human being better than back then?
Perhaps we should avoid viewing history through the lens of the dominant ideology.
